Fear of Flying

Hi Anna

Just go back to the things you were doing when you felt good.

You want to fly with the door open?

You saw me shutting the door...it's normal it's necessary and all part of a safe way to travel.

I'm around if you want to give me a ring.

What's the countdown thing? Five sleeps to go...it's as if you don't want to go!! Come on ping that elastic band and do some realistic thinking. Forget about everything except the present....focus on now and deal with things as they occur...otherwise you'll magnify things unnecessarily.

Have an anxious wobble...have a good one...and then back on track. You're not going to let this spoil your plans are you. Too much to lose to go back now. Keep on keeping on and remember the payoff at the end.

Hi Ana,
Just over 5 years ago I first found Keith's original site and my first post to it was about having claustrophobic feelings and not having flown for 20+years.I have learnt so much about flying since then thanks to Captain Keith and this information really does help me to normalise flying.
You don't say how long your flight is- whatever the length have loads to occupy yourself-I have a special bag, my flying kit containing Mp3 player, small pack of cards, and minature suduku and crosswordbook. At the airport I buy magazines and have a good book with me too.If you are going long haul there is the screen with films on but not on short flights usually.
Once in your seat and your seat belt is as tight as you can get it open the air vents above and feel the breeze circulate. It may be helpful to have a window seat as you get a more spacious feeling as you gaze out to the never ending blue above the fluffy cloud layer.
BELIEVE in YOURSELF, tell yourself o.k it may be challenging but you can do this. If you practice deep breathing concentrate on counting in to 5 on the inhalation , hold the breathe for count of 3 and exhale again mentally counting to 5 to breathe away any panicky feelings.
Remember the Pilot is able to manually open his side window, you are not entirely sealed in and air circulates around the cabin.
PING that elastic band.Tell yourself that there will be other folk on board who are probably just as apprehensive as you feel but can you spot them?.
Since my first tentative posting when I was scared of a 1.5 hour flight to France, my flying journey has taken me to Italy x3, Greece, Abu Dhabi, CUBA,Jersey, and Spain. Go for it See the world.
Sending you positive thoughts and good wishes,, Elizabeth.
Hi Ana,

I find the thing that helps me is being around positive people, just like Elizabeth and people that enjoy flying. When I here people say "I find flying relaxing" it helps me. Do you think they would be relaxed if it was dangerous? Nobody want to put there life at risk.

A person really does have to change the way they think, Start telling yourself you can do it and its gong to be fine. Start telling yourself you want to live and see the world.

I leave for Italy in a few days. I'd be lying if I said was not a little nervous but when I think about seeing Italy for the first time those nervous felling go away.

Elizabeth, how did you like Italy?

-Kenny
Hi Kenny

Italy is a beautiful country...we often visit Tuscany which I say is the mediteranean version of where we live in England.

The roads can be exciting...

The food is wonderful

The people charming

Its so good that if you don't like it I'll pay your fare back !

Keith
Thank you all so much....yes i did have a jolly good wobble, and am now back on track,pinging....breathing...i have downloaded this feed ....Thank you guys,
xx
Hi Kenny, Italy is a wonderful country- great food and coffee, very historical- Rome, Venice, Umbria etc, very romantic, Enjoy yourself and soak up the atmosphere of the Italian experience.
