Hi everyone. Well, at the start of this year as some of you might have read I attempted a flight but ran off as soon as I got on. I have to get on a place again in 6 days, and the fear has started to set in. Already I am looking at ways and means of how I can avoid this, get out of it, or do something different and I cant seem to find a way. My boyfriends brother who is a pilot is coming on the flight with me so he can sit by me and explain things if I want him to, however I just dont think I can do it! I am terrified of being all anxious and panicky on the plane and not being able to get off, and also scared that if I do make it over there - I wont be able to get back!

Can anyone help me with just 6 days to go?

Hi Keith

I am out for most of today, would there be a time tomorrow that would be good to speak to you? Got to go and collect his brother from the airport in the morning - even being there is scaring me!

Hi Sarah

I have those fears too about being stuck on the plane and not being able to get off. When I flew to Dublin and the pilot said "we're 30,000 ft over Cardiff" I nearly had a panic attack. That is not the thing to announce to someone who is terrified in a metal box that high up with no way down!

I hope someone is able to help you.

Hi Tammie

Not quite the way I'd describe flying! However just as a pointer ...probably  better not to use emotive descriptions...try my factual ones, because they will reinforce the normality of flying.

I had a long chat with Sarah and suggested one or two things that she could do to 'organise'  getting over this fear. It does need effort and everyone has to face the fear eventually, but you've done really well to come here and look for strategies so well done from me.

I'm here to help.

Keith

Well I got to the airport but I didnt get on the plane I'm afraid :(

I know we had a big long chat Keith, and I felt that it really helped me and calmed me down a great deal, however when I got to the airport I just didnt want to do it, simple! Not that I didnt think that I couldnt do it, but I just didnt want to.

I think, like you said Keith, I have to be realistic! So I am going to stop. Stop trying, stop worrying and stop making myself feel bad when I try and I cant do it. I am sure that I will not always feel this way and that maybe in the future I will change my mind, but for now I'm done!

Hi Sarah

At least you tried and you're a little further along the road. Let me know when you're ready.

Keith

Hi Keith

I think I'm ready again!!

2012 lucky....

plenty of time to prepare....

I was talking to a friend about flying, and he won't consider the idea (due to fear alone). Won't  even consider discussing it. I then realised how much braver people like us are.

Just reading this thread made me realise that coming here, discussing this stuff, even going to an airport and not getting on a plane is actually huge steps further forward than my friend.

Not sure exactly what my point is, other than I suspect a lot here including you are a lot braver than you think.

I'm here, ready and waiting to help you

I agree

Keith

Hi Sarah,

I think you are being very brave not to completely give up on flying and well done for talking to Keith, he really helps make sense of things...if you read any of my past posts you will see that I was and am a very fearful flier and there was a time I gave up on flying too and just thought it wasn't the worth the hassle of crippling anxiety but then I started feeling really miserable and strangely enough even more fearful about life...so.... my advice would be not to give up but not to feel like you have failed if you decide at the last minute you cant do it...how about a very short flight in 2012?

Mike, I totally agree with you. Some of my friends would never fly, at least we are talking about it and trying our best!

All the best

Caro

Hi Caro

Thanks for your message. I was talking to a work colleague today who couldnt see any reason why I would keep on trying to get on a plane when I get this worked up. I mean I have booked my flight to Italy in June and yet I'm started to get slightly nervous about it now! No idea why I cant just not think about it until closer to the time.

And I totally know what you mean about the feeling miserable part - i thought i would be happy when I decided that i wasnt going to fly anymore, but actually i felt worse as i felt as if i was missing out on so much. My boyfriend travels the world with work and this weekend is going to San Fran for a week. He suggested me trying to head out there and spending a week in Napa valley - who does not want to go and sit in vineyards all week!!!! (i dont drink that much honestly!!) But the point is I want to be able to do these things sometimes without getting all het up about it.

I thought about having a trial flight from Newcastle down to see a friend in Bristol one weekend, but part of me is worried that if I dont do that then I'll just feel rubbish again.

Sarah :)
