Hi, Im new to the site but am an avid reader of fly without fear book!!! I fly 4-5 times a year and usually at least 1 of those is long haul. My fear seems to be getting worse over the years not better. I fly to New York next week, and am petrified. I hate flying over the ocean. If something were to happen theres no where to land? My other fear on this flight is I have done research into the plane we will be flying on and its nearly 19 years old!!! Irrational I know!!! But should a plane of that age really be making such a long journey? If there was a problem over the middle of the ocean where would they land? Air france flight crashed in to the atlantic so it can happen???
Yes I'm back home safely and we had a very smooth 8 hour flight from Antigua with NO turbulence at all.
It's a fact that the safety record of some small airlines in the far east is not as good as the rest of the world.
A flame out is a loss of engine power, and it looks as if the pilot lost control of the plane at low altitude. Why this happened is another matter. But will be revealed in the coming months.
You mustn't let this incident affect your attitude to flying anymore than you'd let the tens of thousands of deaths on Indian roads to stop you taking taxi in Mumbai. Of course if you fearful you will feels worse when things like this happen. but the chances are very very very slight.
Don't think about cancelling your holiday, rather, think about how you're planning to deal with your worries.
Have you got time to attend our course this saturday?
This comment isn't meant to make me look smart or brave ... it's to say ''This is how I think about flying because I know the facts"
It's vital to know the truth about flying otherwise the 'fiction' gets in the way. You can overcome your fear to the extent that you can 'manage' your flights. i don't expect you to feel as i do but you can feel a lot better than you do ... it'll take work but it's possible ... just look at all the stories on this site.
I can understand how you feel and I don't make light of it, but neither do I want to help you to worry about things that don't need worrying about.
Tell me what your strategy is to deal with your forthcoming flights

I'm sitting between reception an d one of the pools we've had super lunch and just sitting around waiting for the taxi
What have I got to be scared of I wonder? How would you feel if you were on tho flight with me?
And The plane is over 20 years old ..... andI bet it's In better conditio than the taxi I'm about to get in which is a nearly new Toyota
I don't worry because I know the facts
If I end Up in the sea I'll send you a postcard from whatever desert island I end up on
Failing that I'll chat tomorrow ok?
Worrying won't make your flight safer so pop over to flyingwithoutfear.com and check out some facts
perhaps they would...
It's certainly not easy!!!! I try and try to be rational but it doesn't seem to help!!! I would quite happily cancel our holiday next week if it wasn't for my husband and kids who would never forgive me. X
We're going to sort you out when you get home ok?
