Hi there

Just wanted to ask Captain Keith:

Last time I flew we had quite bad turbulence and I had a pretty bad time. This was in the middle of summer, but the weather had changed quite suddenly the day before - from being quite warm to cool, rainy and windy.

The forecast for my next flight sounds pretty similar - rainy and windy - and I'm suddenly feeling far more nervous about it because I'm scared that it will be like the last time I flew. Obviously everything was fine, but I want to be prepared for it if that's likely to happen again. So do these sort of weather conditions necessarily mean turbulence?

Thanks

Hiya cupcake

Winter or summer won't affect the amount of turbulence you get. May be none maybe some...vbut whatever it's actually nothing that you need worry about.

Have you seen this page on the main site?

TURBULENCE

Don't bother with looking at the weather forecast ...the pilots will do all that and they probably know more about it than you do.

You'll only worry yourself uneccessarily? Did knowing about the weather ever help you feel better? What can you prepare for now...just wait til it happens and then deal with it, otherwise you'll sit there all tensed up and at the slightest bump you'll become alarmed.

I know I'm hard but honestly doing what you're doing will make you feel worse.

Thank you. I've replied in the other thread. Will be extremely grateful if you could reply before tomorrow as I really don't want to do this without an idea of what to expect. My own imagination is not what I want to be going on right now.

Your imagination will be wilder than the weather will be.

So many people on this network have felt like you...stick with it..face your fear and though this flight may be hard for you, the next one will be a little easier and the one after that will be better and so on. Nothing will change dramatically or suddenly ...take one sure step at a time.

Be bentle on yourself.

Where are you flying to and from?

Keith

Thanks again

We're just going to Dublin (from London) as I thought it would be an easy flight. I don't think I could deal with it being a bad one as the last one I did was terrible and I need a good one now to give me the confidence to 'get over' this. If it doesn't go well I think that all it will do is reinforce my belief that I'll always be unlucky with flights.

Stop worrying so

The last one was the last one...resolve with all your might and love for your partner that come what may with your feelings....your feelings are only feelings....they dont and won't affect what happens on the flight. I'm just looking out of the window now...I live about 40 miles south of Heathrow and its pouring down...but if I were operating a flight tomorrow I wouldn't even think about this weather...it's normal to me...all in a day's work.

hi again

Well, I survived! As it turned out, I did end up flying on the worst possible day weather-wise, as you'll have seen if you're based in the UK. Storms, clouds - everything really. We ended up waiting a long time at the airport as flights were delayed accordingly, and this did finally make me realise that they won't fly if it's dangerous to do so . By the time we took off 3 hours late, the bad weather had subsided a fair bit, and while it wasn't the smoothest flight I've been on, it was actually significantly less bumpy than many. I was really surprised!

The airline we flew with was fantastic, and because of the awful weather, quite a few scared people did go up to talk to them before take-off. This really helped me as I didn't feel like the only 'nutter'. They even ended up letting a couple of us into the cockpit, which I hadn't done before and it helped massively as the pilots were really chatty and assured us that they would not be going anywhere until it was totally safe.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks again for your words of encouragement. I was a wreck, but feel stronger for having done this at a bad time and still being ok. Will be looking into doing one of your courses before my next planned trip in the summer. Hypnotherapy helped me to a point, but I think knowing on a more practical level what to expect will be helpful.
