getting jittery, an 8-hour flight in 2 weeks :/

I'll be off to Japan 2 weeks from now. Since my last flight a week ago, my nerves have been getting the better of me. I'm feeling more nervous than my last flight. 

My upcoming flight will involve a one-hour transit in Hong Kong. I have this irrational fear that I will make the leg to Hong Kong but will refuse to board the connecting flight to Japan. 

I've been unfocused at work and just very jittery all around. The anxiety is so strong that I've lost my appetite :( I've even started compiling a list of psycho-therapists in Japan and Hong Kong so that I can seek professional help in case I have a breakdown. 

This journey feels so lonely sometimes. I have well-meaning aquaintences who give me bad advice like, "someone should just punch you, then you can pass out". How come they don't understand that this only makes me feel worse? So miserable :(

One thing that has helped me to relax is to mediate for a few minutes every day. But if anyone has any advice on coping with my anxieties leading up to my flight, I'm all ears.

Hi Lyn.

Meditation sounds good - let us know if it helps. Apart from that, I'd just reiterate everything I said before you went to Thailand. You've done a lot of work on this and it's obviously starting to pay off as you're flying now (as opposed to the last 6 years.)

I agree with Keith too - picture yourself being confident and think about feeling great when you've completed your next flight.

I really get how difficult it is to let go of a fear that you've had for so long. I'm certainly guilty of doing that - thinking that as soon as I stop being afraid, something bad will happen. Like somehow my fear and anxiety is keeping the plane safe or... I don't know! It sounds daft written from the comfort of my sofa but so real on a plane. Either way, I'm trying to say I understand.

You're going to be able to take these flights and have fun in Tokyo (I love Japan. I lived there for a while in 2008 and had a great time.)

Thank you for your reply :) I know I have to break this chain of negative thoughts. It does nothing but feed my fear. I'm trying to focus on my vacation and what I'll be doing there instead. It's hard but I'm going to work hard at it!

it's time to stop feeding your fear

don't use such emotive language that only strengthens the links in your head to the fear. How can you predict how you will feel  about taking the next flight. Why not imagine that you'll be so proud of yourself that you'll enjoy the flight.

Was there nothing to be taken from your recent success apart from doubt. All that effort and pain and you're still looking on the dark side. Time to be more upbeat. Being upbeat won't invoke any gods of retribution. Stop fearing the worst and use the evidence that you have to compliment yourself for what you've achieved.
