Too many horror stories on the news

I have flown several times. It has been five years since I flew last. It seems like since I booked my flight to Florida there have been news reports about near misses and air traffic control errors. I talk myself out of my fear then the new this morning sent me into an anxiety attack about the United plane which had an emergency landing on a deserted island. I feel like something or someone is trying to send me a message to not fly. I am completely freaked out now. My husband told me to stop watching the news and my kids are excited to fly. I offered a fourteen hour road trip but they said no. I kept myself anonymous because I do not want my kids to know how freaked out I am

Hello Annonymous.
"I had a friend flying to Tampa and the lights went out on the plane and it landed with a flat tyre" - to me that reads as two great positive stories that some went through two issues ( lights failing and a tyre puncture ) that would send people into a potential panic and may seem like the worst possible thing that could happen. ..... what was the outcome? The plane landed safely

Ok. You've gained nothing. What are you planning to do now?

I have not gained anything and I feel bad for disappointing my kids and my mom. I cried myself to sleep two nights in a row. But I do validate my fear of the news today and then I had a friend flying to Tampa Monday and the lights went out on the plane and they landed with a flat tire. I may fly again just not now.

This is just a blip in the process of overcoming your fear.

What have you gained from the experience?

Hi,

You shouldn't have cancel it :( Now ask yourself why ? Why you have cancelled ? Do you really think something bad could happen ? Bad things could happen everywhere. I mean I really understand your feeling and there was times when I was just about to do the same. My solution was to change thinking so that I got a shame of myself. Somehow I could manage to have strength and do it.

Do yourself a favor - order short trip with plane just anywhere and try to be stronger than you think you can. Enjoy the flights.

I cancelled the whole trip. I couldn't do it. I know I will regret it Saturday but honestly I feel so relieved right now.

Hi,

I know that feeling when you think that everything happening in your life tells you not to fly. I know that so well. Skip this feeling. Just skip it. It's your brain making tricks on you. Simple as that. No human on earth can predict future or see what will happen. Just trust facts about planes and flying and stop reading news.
